The Czech Ministry of Defence has formally signed a strategic framework agreement with Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH for the long-term maintenance of the Czech Army’s Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks. Valued at CZK 6.16 billion (approximately EUR 250 million) over a seven-year period, the deal is a significant milestone in the country’s shift from Soviet-era military hardware to NATO-standard systems.
The agreement includes comprehensive service support, repairs, and the provision of spare parts to ensure the Leopard 2A4 fleet remains operationally ready. Lubor Koudelka, Senior Director of the MoD’s Armaments and Acquisitions Section, emphasized that reliable service support is essential for maintaining tank systems and reaffirmed the importance of the Leopard platform in reducing the Czech Army’s reliance on Russian equipment.
The contract covers 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks acquired from Rheinmetall under a December 2024 agreement, in addition to 30 tanks—both battle and recovery variants—previously donated by Germany in exchange for Czech military aid to Ukraine. With Rheinmetall involved in both the supply and ongoing maintenance, the agreement ensures consistency and supports Prague’s continued integration with NATO defense infrastructure.
