Elbit Systems’ German subsidiary has entered into an agreement with startup Cucuyo GmbH to secure exclusive rights to adapt its laser-based communication technology for military use. Under the arrangement, Elbit will be able to utilize and further develop the technology for defense applications, while any jointly developed systems will have their intellectual property assigned to Elbit.
As part of the collaboration, Elbit is setting up a dedicated R&D framework in Germany to advance laser communication solutions for military platforms, with initial efforts focused on integration into drones and ground-based systems. Unlike conventional RF-based systems, laser communications use light to transmit data, enabling higher bandwidth, improved resistance to electronic interference, and greater protection against interception.
The deal aligns with Elbit’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in Europe, particularly in Germany, where it has been expanding production and development activities. For Cucuyo, the partnership offers access to Elbit’s expertise in electro-optics, communications, and system integration. While financial terms remain undisclosed, both companies indicated that early products leveraging this technology could be deployed in the near term.
