Australian defense company Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has signed a binding conditional agreement valued at $80 million to manufacture and supply its 100-kilowatt high-energy laser weapon system to a customer in South Korea, marking a major export success for directed-energy defense technology. Designed primarily to counter aerial drone threats, the laser system delivers energy at the speed of light, allowing it to neutralize multiple targets in seconds at a cost of less than 10 cents per engagement. According to EOS, individual threats can be destroyed in as little as two seconds, offering a highly cost-effective alternative to missile-based air defense. The agreement also includes the formation of a joint venture with a Korean partner to develop, manufacture, and supply 100-kilowatt laser systems for the domestic market, along with the licensing of relevant intellectual property, subject to regulatory and contractual approvals. Production for the export order will be supported by EOS’ newly established laser weapons manufacturing facility in Singapore. The contract structure includes an initial $18 million deposit, a letter of credit for the remaining balance, customer inspections, and formal acceptance of the Singapore production hub, all expected to be completed by January 2026. If conditions are met, system delivery is planned by the end of 2027, followed by in-country demonstrations.
