The German Armed Forces have started taking delivery of GL-40 grenade launchers from Austrian firm Steyr Arms, following an expanded order linked to a 2024 contract.

Steyr confirmed that the first units have been shipped from its Kleinraming facility, alongside a parallel agreement for additional launchers under a revised framework finalized in late February.

The initial contract includes 4,776 units and forms part of Germany’s broader military modernization program, with the systems featuring slight modifications tailored to Bundeswehr requirements.

GL-40 Overview
The GL-40 is a 40mm grenade launcher designed for both standalone deployment and integration with platforms such as the G95K, Steyr AUG 5.56mm rifles, and the newer G95A1 systems.

Its modular architecture supports a range of optics and targeting accessories. Weighing approximately 1.7 kg (3.75 lbs), the launcher incorporates a compact design, adjustable stock, and side-loading barrel.

The cold hammer-forged construction enhances durability and ensures consistent accuracy during prolonged use. Steyr noted that the GL-40 is already in service with multiple international operators and highlighted its importance in strengthening NATO-aligned forces.
