An Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft touched down at Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Saturday, delivering a HAL-built Dornier 228 (H-228) to Guyana, marking a key step in strengthening the country’s civil aviation capabilities. This delivery highlights India’s growing role as a dependable partner in supporting aviation infrastructure development in friendly nations.

A second C-17 is expected to arrive soon with another Dornier 228, further expanding Guyana’s fleet. These dual deliveries follow a structured, phased approach under the India–Guyana cooperation framework, aimed at enhancing connectivity and accessibility across the South American nation.

This transfer builds on India’s earlier provision of two Dornier 228 aircraft in March 2024 under a Line of Credit arrangement. The High Commission of India in Guyana described the ongoing program as a “robust and growing partnership,” emphasizing its contribution to regional connectivity and aviation infrastructure.

The initiative also supports long-term development goals by improving access to remote and hinterland areas, unlocking economic potential, and promoting social development in regions with limited ground transportation. Upon arrival, the Acting High Commissioner formally received the aircraft, meeting with the IAF crew and HAL officials, and praised the professionalism and coordination between India’s military and aerospace sectors.

With the induction of additional Dornier 228 aircraft, Guyana’s civil aviation network will be significantly strengthened, particularly in providing reliable air links to underserved and remote regions, where ground infrastructure is often sparse.
