The US Navy’s MK 38 close-in weapon system is entering its fourth major iteration, marking its first caliber upgrade in more than 30 years.
The new MK 38 MOD 4 replaces the legacy 25mm cannon with Northrop Grumman’s 30mm Bushmaster II main gun, introducing air-burst munitions to significantly expand the system’s engagement capabilities.
Upgraded electro-optical and infrared sensors, along with a modernized operator console, further enhance targeting performance, turning the MK 38 into a more intelligent and responsive weapon against evolving maritime threats.
