The NATO Support and Procurement Agency has launched an initial procurement request for 120mm tank ammunition from Rheinmetall, acting on behalf of several NATO member nations.

The contract, valued at roughly €200 million (approximately $237 million), falls under a framework agreement concluded in 2025. The ammunition will replenish stocks of 120mm rounds used by main battle tanks operating across the Alliance.

Under the framework arrangement — referred to as the Basic Contractual Instrument (BCI) — participating countries are able to procure 120mm ammunition through the NSPA. Rheinmetall stated that the BCI establishes the contractual terms and conditions along with detailed technical specifications covering multiple variants of 120mm tank ammunition.

120mm Ammunition Portfolio

Rheinmetall’s 120mm smoothbore gun system, in operational service since 1980, has become the standard main armament for the armed forces of Germany, NATO allies, and other partner nations worldwide. It equips leading main battle tanks such as the Leopard 2 and the M1 Abrams.

Leveraging the system’s proven performance and modernization potential, Rheinmetall continues to advance threat-adapted 120mm ammunition solutions. Its portfolio includes armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds for heavily armored targets, high-explosive multi-purpose ammunition for infantry, light armor, and fortified positions, as well as training rounds designed to replicate the ballistic characteristics of live combat munitions.
