Romania has finalized a 223-million-euro ($260 million) deal with Turkey for a HISAR-class corvette, complemented by a logistics and training package to ensure seamless operational deployment. The purchase contributes to Romania’s long-term modernization agenda, which focuses on equipping its Naval Forces with advanced vessels capable of handling surveillance, protection, and combat roles in the increasingly contested Black Sea region. The Ministry of National Defence stated that all acquisition elements—shipbuilding, training, and sustainment—are bundled into the overall cost. The project cleared major national approval stages in 2025, receiving authorization from the Homeland Defence Supreme Council and unanimous endorsement from both chambers’ defense committees. The HISAR corvette, displacing 2,300 tons and measuring 99 meters, is configured for multi-threat environments. Its systems include a 76mm naval gun, RAM launchers, Mk 32 torpedo tubes, and remotely controlled weapon stations enhancing close-range defense. Its integrated sensor suite—spanning 3D radar, sonar, and advanced EW systems—strengthens situational awareness and supports joint missions. HISAR-class vessels are already operational within the Turkish Navy, performing escort duties, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime patrols in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean. They have taken part in major NATO exercises and bilateral drills, showcasing interoperability with allied forces. Additionally, the ships have been instrumental in protecting offshore assets and maintaining oversight of vital maritime corridors.
