Serco has been awarded a £7.8 million ($10 million) contract by the UK Ministry of Defence to deliver maintenance and logistics support for the EJ200 engines used in the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon combat aircraft.
The five-year agreement marks a new direct service arrangement between Serco and the RAF, replacing previous subcontracting through Rolls-Royce. Support operations will remain based at RAF Coningsby and RAF Lossiemouth, where 26 engineering and logistics positions will be maintained.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, jointly developed by Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo, has been in RAF service since 2003, performing air superiority, policing, and quick reaction duties.
Powered by two EJ200 engines, each delivering 90 kN (20,232 lbs) of thrust, the Typhoon achieves sustained supersonic cruise without afterburners. The engines’ integrated health monitoring and durable, lightweight design extend their operational life to 1,200 flying hours before requiring unplanned maintenance.
