Bratislava has concluded a framework agreement to export its domestically developed SAM-120 self-propelled mortar system to Azerbaijan, Slovak news agency Pravda reported.
The contract was signed on the sidelines of the World Defense Show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between Slovakia’s state-owned ZŤS Špeciál and Azerbaijan’s Iglin Scientific Production Enterprise.
The agreement covers an initial batch of 96 systems, with provisions for up to 300 units depending on Baku’s operational needs. The first tranche is valued at 210 million euros ($249 million), and production is set to begin immediately.
Describing it as the “largest deal,” Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák said the first system will be showcased to Azerbaijan’s armed forces and stakeholders at a defense exhibition in Baku in autumn 2026. He added that talks will also address licensing arrangements and the potential transfer of partial or full production capabilities to Azerbaijan.
SAM-120 Weapon System
Unveiled in 2024, the 120-millimeter SAM-120 is a fully automated mortar system equipped with a 35-round magazine. The turreted platform has a firing range of approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) and can deliver up to 20 rounds per minute.
Operated by a crew of two to four personnel, the system offers 360-degree traverse for all-around coverage.
