The United States has approved a potential $2.6 billion sale of HH-60W combat rescue helicopters and associated equipment to Norway, a key NATO ally bordering Russia.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the proposed deal will enhance Norway’s ability to respond to current and emerging threats by boosting its airborne combat and special operations capacity.

The DSCA added that Norway intends to use the helicopters in defense of NATO allies and will be able to seamlessly integrate the systems into its military operations.

The U.S. State Department cleared the sale, and the DSCA has formally notified Congress, which must now approve the transaction.
