The United Kingdom has chosen Persistent Systems to supply the British Army’s global response force with an advanced tactical communications system that provides voice and broadband connectivity without relying on fixed infrastructure.
Under the program, Persistent will deliver its Wave Relay system to the 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team, enabling frontline troops to exchange messages, track friendly and hostile positions on digital maps, and transmit live video and imagery to commanders located thousands of miles away.
At the core of the system is the MPU5 Radio, which operates on **Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) architecture. In this network structure, mobile nodes function as routers, allowing soldiers to remain connected even in dynamic and highly mobile combat environments.
If a node is destroyed or moves out of range, the network automatically redirects data through other nodes to maintain communication links.
Troops from the 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team tested the system in dense jungle conditions last year, where heavy vegetation and moisture can absorb radio signals and hinder communications.
Cloud Connectivity
The system also incorporates the Cloud Relay gateway, enabling nodes to connect the mesh network to the internet. This capability allows separate MANET networks in different locations to link through the cloud and function as a single extended network.
In addition to the MPU5 Radio, the package includes ruggedized displays, controllers, and supporting dismounted equipment for soldiers operating in the field.
