The United States Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) is evaluating what could become the next evolution in US artillery capability, testing a rocket-boosted projectile designed to strike targets at greater distances with improved accuracy.
Known as the Next-Generation Rocket Assisted Projectile (NGRAP), the round is intended to surpass the roughly 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) range of existing artillery systems, including standard 155mm howitzers.
The system is also planned to replace the Army’s long-serving M549A1 rocket-assisted projectiles, which have remained operational for over 50 years, according to Steve Flores, YPG’s Long Range Precision Fire Integrator.
