L3Harris Technologies has won its largest-ever full-rate production contract for submarine communications systems, securing an agreement from General Dynamics Electric Boat to deliver 26 shipsets for the US Navy’s Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines.

The upgraded communications suites are designed to enhance connectivity, situational awareness, and secure data exchange for crews during operations. Production under the contract will continue through 2033, with options to expand support to additional Columbia-class submarines and potentially allied fleets.

This award builds on L3Harris’ longstanding role in US Navy undersea communications, including prior support for the Ohio- and Los Angeles-class submarines.

The Virginia-class submarine is a nuclear-powered fast-attack platform built for coastal and open-ocean missions, including anti-submarine warfare, land strikes with Tomahawk missiles, and intelligence operations. Measuring about 377 feet and displacing up to 10,200 tons, it carries roughly 145 personnel and is armed with Mk 48 torpedoes.

Meanwhile, the Columbia-class submarine—currently under development—will replace the Ohio-class as the backbone of America’s sea-based nuclear deterrent. At approximately 560 feet long and nearly 21,000 tons submerged, it will feature advanced stealth, modern sensors, ballistic missiles, and a life-of-ship reactor.
