France has officially received the first H160 helicopter for the French National Gendarmerie, with the handover taking place at Airbus Helicopters’ Marignane facility in southern France.

The aircraft is part of a 2021 order for 10 H160 helicopters and represents the largest rotary-wing platform to enter service with the National Gendarmerie, significantly expanding its operational capabilities.

Delivery of the first aircraft marks the start of a formal acceptance process, followed by phased operational integration and entry into service. This process, scheduled to continue through early 2027, includes pilot and maintenance crew training, certification activities, and the establishment of standard operating procedures.

Under a long-term support agreement with Airbus Helicopters, the H160 fleet will receive comprehensive technical assistance, spare parts positioned at four operating bases, and digital services to support daily missions.

The delivery is part of the National Gendarmerie’s broader helicopter fleet renewal program, which began earlier this year with the induction of the H145. Both platforms are designed to operate in complementary roles and share common systems such as the Helionix avionics suite, communications equipment, and mission systems, simplifying maintenance and training while enhancing interoperability.

As a multi-role helicopter, the H160 is capable of supporting offshore transport, emergency medical services, and public security missions, and incorporates Airbus’ latest-generation technologies. The aircraft has a maximum operating altitude of 6,096 meters, cruises at 255 km/h, and can be flown by one or two pilots with seating for up to 12 passengers.

With a maximum takeoff weight of 6,050 kilograms and a useful payload of up to 2,000 kilograms, the H160 is powered by two Safran Arrano 1A engines delivering up to 955 kW each for takeoff and can carry up to 1,120 kilograms of fuel.
