The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Italy valued at up to $301 million, covering 100 AGM-158B/B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles – Extended Range (JASSM-ER), along with associated equipment and support, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
The formal notification to Congress marks a significant milestone, positioning Italy among the select group of European nations capable of conducting deep precision strikes at distances nearing 1,000 km. In the context of heightened regional security concerns following the war in Ukraine, the proposed sale transforms Italy’s F-35 fleet into a strategic long-range deterrent force rather than a solely tactical strike platform.
Beyond the missiles themselves, the package includes classified test systems, dedicated containers, KGV-135A encryption devices, spare and repair components, consumables, and accessories, as well as maintenance and return support, transportation, site surveys, and documentation. It further encompasses software, manuals, technical publications, plus U.S. Government and contractor engineering, logistics, and sustainment assistance.
DSCA indicates that $301 million reflects the maximum estimated quantity and cost, with the final contract expected to be lower once Italy finalizes its configuration and budget authority. The arrangement effectively secures access to a mature U.S. deep-strike ecosystem while maintaining flexibility in scope.
