BAE Systems’ San Diego shipyard has been awarded contracts worth $98 million by the U.S. Navy to carry out planned modernization and repair work on two surface combatants.
The awards cover the littoral combat ship USS Kansas City and the guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale, with the objective of restoring both vessels to full operational readiness.
Under a $37 million docking selected restricted availability contract, BAE Systems will drydock the trimaran Kansas City, conduct underwater hull preservation, upgrade shipboard systems, and refurbish accommodations for its 41-member crew.
Work on Stockdale, valued at $61 million, will include hull preservation, refurbishment of the ship’s superstructure, restoration of interior fuel and ballast tanks, and upgrades to crew living spaces.
Both maintenance availabilities are scheduled to commence in May 2026.
The USS Kansas City is the 12th Independence-class littoral combat ship, while the USS Stockdale is the 56th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, which entered service in April 2009.
BAE Systems has consistently secured large sustainment and modernization contracts from the U.S. Navy in recent years. In September 2024, the service awarded the company a $177.8 million contract to maintain and modernize USS Halsey, including hull preservation, Aegis combat system upgrades, and habitability improvements.
Additional awards in 2024 included a $202 million contract covering maintenance of USS Laboon and the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, as well as an $87 million contract for repair and restoration work on USS Carter Hall. In December 2025, BAE Systems also received a $123 million depot-level modernization contract for USS Forrest Sherman, encompassing hull work and command-and-control system enhancements.
