The German Armed Forces have awarded a €4.2 billion (approximately $4.92 billion) contract to the Rheinmetall–KNDS Deutschland joint venture for the procurement of 200 Puma infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs).
Deliveries are scheduled to commence in mid-2028, with the contract covering the integration of the MELLS anti-tank guided missile system, the European designation for Rafael’s Spike LR missile.
The Spike LR missile, produced by a joint venture between Rafael and German partners Diehl and Rheinmetall, offers an engagement range of up to 4 kilometers. The more advanced Spike LR2 variant further extends the range by approximately 1.5 kilometers and is equipped with a tandem high-explosive anti-tank warhead capable of defeating modern main battle tanks, armored vehicles, and select maritime targets.
In addition to its anti-armor role, the Spike LR2 can be employed effectively in urban combat scenarios, including in-structure detonation against fortified positions. Integration of the missile system enables the Puma to engage threats beyond visual range, substantially improving battlefield survivability.
The Puma IFV is the primary combat platform of Germany’s armored infantry forces and is widely regarded as one of the most advanced infantry fighting vehicles currently in service. The vehicle is operated by a three-person crew—commander, gunner, and driver—and can transport six dismounted infantry soldiers.
Equipped with a modular protection architecture, the Puma delivers high levels of survivability and firepower and is designed for fully networked operations in modern combat environments. Between 2023 and 2024, the German military initiated a comprehensive modernization program for 297 Puma IFVs, with completion planned by 2029.
The upgrade effort includes the integration of advanced day- and night-vision sensor systems, the Spike LR missile capability, and modern digital communications equipment to enhance situational awareness and network-centric warfare capability.
