The Croatian Navy is planning to acquire two new corvettes, with the program estimated to cost between 660 million euros ($768 million) and 1.6 billion euros ($1.86 billion).

Once commissioned, the ships would become the largest surface combatants in Croatia’s fleet, which currently comprises five missile boats and six patrol vessels.

The Ministry of Defence is holding discussions with as many as 12 shipyards from eight countries that have met the initial technical and operational criteria for the program.

Shortlisted candidates include shipbuilders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, South Korea, Turkey (two yards), Spain, and the United States. Leading contenders are reported to include Italy’s Fincantieri, the Netherlands’ Damen, Germany’s Lürssen, and South Korea’s Hyundai.

Design proposals range from Turkey’s cost-effective MİLGEM ADA-class corvette and South Korea’s larger light frigate to European offerings such as France’s Gowind, Germany’s K-130, Italy’s EPC and Al Zubarah designs, the Netherlands’ Sigma-class, Spain’s Avante 2200, and the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship concept.

The planned vessels would displace between 1,000 and 3,500 tonnes and measure approximately 80 to 120 meters (262 to 394 feet) in length, with several configuration options under consideration.
