Denmark has strengthened its air defense network by acquiring additional IRIS-T SLM fire units under the German-led European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).

The IRIS-T medium-range surface-launched system is capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles at distances of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) and altitudes of 20 kilometers (12 miles).

This latest procurement enhances Denmark’s ground-based air and missile defense, improving protection for civilians, military forces, and critical infrastructure from airborne threats, including drone activity.

It follows Denmark’s earlier decision this year to adopt Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM as its primary ground-based air defense solution.

The acquisition uses ESSI’s standardized contract framework, allowing for quicker, streamlined procurement.

ESSI was established in 2022 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the goal of creating a layered, integrated air and missile defense architecture across Europe.

Multiple nations — including Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Switzerland — have purchased or operate the IRIS-T SLM system, benefitting from shared training, logistics, and joint procurement.

Denmark has increased its air defense investments amid the evolving security situation triggered by Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The country recently signed a $579-million deal for the NASAMS medium-range air defense system from Kongsberg.

Additionally, the US has approved Denmark’s $3.7-billion request for the Integrated Battle Command System, Indirect Fire Protection Capability, and 200 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAMs.
