General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has received a contract to deliver next-generation reconnaissance vehicles for the German Army’s Reconnaissance Corps, marking one of the country’s largest recent ground vehicle procurements.
Under the €3 billion ($3.48 billion) agreement, 274 Luchs 2 vehicles will be supplied between 2029 and 2032, with provisions for training systems, simulators, and logistical support, plus an option for 82 additional units.
The Luchs 2, built on the latest Piranha 6×6 platform, is designed to replace the aging Fennek 4×4 reconnaissance vehicle. It combines amphibious capability, advanced networked sensors, and improved mobility with low acoustic and thermal signatures for stealthier operations.
A separate deal with Rheinmetall is expected to cover up to 310 KBA 25mm automatic cannons, capable of 600 rounds per minute and engagements up to 2,700 meters (8,858 feet), providing medium-range fire support.
The program also includes contributions from Hensoldt Optronics for the sensor suite, e.sigma for training simulators, and Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland for camouflage systems.
Each vehicle will have a gross weight of 25 tons and a payload capacity of 7.5 tons, enhancing versatility and mission readiness across diverse operational environments.
