Germany has strengthened its land forces yet again by placing another major order with Rheinmetall for 120mm tank ammunition under an ongoing framework agreement.
The new request adds several hundred million euros’ worth of both training and live combat rounds to the Bundeswehr’s stockpile, part of Berlin’s effort to rebuild ammunition reserves amid a more unstable European security landscape.
This replenishment initiative stems from July 2023, when Germany extended Rheinmetall’s framework contract and raised its ceiling to around four billion euros ($4.6 billion).
Running through 2030, the agreement supports the acquisition of several hundred thousand 120mm x 570 cartridges for the Leopard 2’s smoothbore main gun.
Germany’s broader focus on readiness and modernization has led to a steady pace of Rheinmetall awards in recent years.
Notable among these was the order for Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles, part of Berlin’s push to modernize its mechanized formations.
Rheinmetall also secured a major deal for the Skyranger 30 short-range air defense turret, designed to counter drones and low-altitude threats — a priority area informed by recent battlefield lessons.
Berlin has additionally tapped Rheinmetall to replenish 155mm artillery ammunition stocks, including extended-range shells needed after supporting Ukraine.
Further contracts have included funding for HX tactical trucks, upgrades to Puma infantry fighting vehicles, and procurement of digital soldier systems as part of wider modernization programs.
