OCCAR has signed a renewed support agreement with Hensoldt for continued sustainment of the COBRA counter-battery radar system used by France and Germany. The new contract, running from 2026 to 2028, is being finalized ahead of the current arrangement ending on 31 December 2025, ensuring ongoing engineering and technical support. Under the deal, Hensoldt — acting as the design authority — will manage configuration control, troubleshooting, technical support, on-site maintenance, logistics documentation, cyber-security management, and quality and safety processes. A major focus will be long-term obsolescence mitigation. COBRA was developed through a tri-national program involving Thales, Airbus Defence and Space, and Lockheed Martin, with deliveries completed by 2007. ESG originally held the support contract, renewed in 2022 before the company’s acquisition by Hensoldt. Known for its high-precision tracking and fast response, COBRA can detect enemy artillery positions within minutes and assist friendly forces in refining fire missions. Enhanced variants extend operational range to 100 km and incorporate features including multi-layer search capability and automated sandstorm filtering for harsh operational settings.
