KNDS Deutschland has finalized the delivery of all 44 Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks to the Hungarian Army, marking a major milestone in Budapest’s long-term armored modernization effort. The deliveries are part of a comprehensive defense procurement agreement signed in 2018, which also included 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers, three Leguan armored bridge layers, and five Wisent armored recovery vehicles, along with simulation systems and full training and logistics support packages. The Leopard 2A7HU tanks have been assigned to the Hungarian Army’s 1st Armored Brigade, where they will replace aging Soviet-era T-72M1 tanks and significantly enhance the force’s survivability, firepower, and interoperability with NATO allies. The Leopard 2A7HU features a hull length of 7.7 meters, extending to approximately 11 meters with the main gun forward, a width of 3.7 meters without additional armor, and a height of roughly 3 meters. Its primary armament is the Rheinmetall L55A1 120 mm smoothbore gun, capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 5,000 meters with high accuracy. Secondary weapons include a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, a remotely operated 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, and smoke grenade launchers for battlefield concealment. Together, these capabilities position Hungary’s armored forces among the most modern in Central Europe.
