The Indian Navy has officially commissioned INS Nistar, its first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV), during a ceremony held at the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam. The event was attended by Minister of State for Defence, Shri Sanjay Seth. This milestone marks a major leap forward in India’s undersea warfare and submarine rescue capabilities—areas traditionally dominated by only a select few navies worldwide.
Constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, INS Nistar is a specialized vessel engineered for saturation diving operations, complex underwater salvage, and deep-sea submarine crew rescues. With its cutting-edge equipment—including Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Diving Support Chambers, and a Self-Propelled Hyperbaric Lifeboat—the ship can operate at depths reaching 300 meters, significantly enhancing India’s blue-water naval capabilities.
