Kenya has taken delivery of an Israeli-made SPYDER air defense system, marking a significant enhancement of Nairobi’s military capabilities and highlighting an evolving security partnership with Israel.

The system was transported aboard an Israeli cargo aircraft and is valued at 3.4 billion Kenyan shillings ($26.4 million). Its arrival comes just five months after President William Ruto’s administration finalized a $26 million loan agreement with Israel.

Produced by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, the SPYDER system is designed to detect, track, and intercept hostile aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles, providing Kenya with a modern air defense solution in a region frequently challenged by terrorism and cross-border insecurity.

Kenya has been gradually strengthening its armed forces through a series of defense acquisitions. In July 2024, the country received UH-1 Huey helicopters from the United States, fulfilling a commitment made during President Ruto’s official visit to Washington. These aircraft are now in service with the Kenya Defence Forces.

The helicopter delivery followed an earlier $1.3 million U.S. military aid package, provided through U.S. Africa Command, which included 6,730 sets of body armor, ballistic helmets for small-arms protection, and ballistic plates capable of defeating higher-caliber threats.
