Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration has signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace to supply Protector RS4 remote weapon stations for the Swedish Army’s CV90 fleet.
The deal, worth more than 400 million krona ($42.7 million), will replace the current Protector Nordic (Vapenstation VS01) units with a more advanced configuration. It also includes options for additional systems for other army platforms.
After delivery, the RS4 stations will equip three CV90 variants under the designation Vapenstation VS02. The new system offers enhanced sensors, longer engagement ranges, and multi-weapon compatibility, all while allowing operators to remain protected inside the vehicle.
The CV90—designed by BAE Systems Hägglunds—forms the backbone of Sweden’s infantry fighting vehicle fleet and exists in infantry, reconnaissance, and command versions. Sweden has ordered new CV9035s and donated several older CV9040s to Ukraine, accelerating plans to replenish and modernize its inventory.
Kongsberg’s RS4 weighs between 135 and 190 kilograms (298–419 pounds), depending on configuration, and stands 505–765 millimeters (20–30 inches) tall without weapons installed. It features advanced cameras and sensors optimized for day and night missions.
The station delivers full 360-degree rotation at up to 90 degrees per second and an elevation range of –20 to +60 degrees with a movement rate of 70 degrees per second, ensuring fast and accurate engagement.
It can mount a wide array of weapons, including Browning M2 and WKM-B 12.7 mm heavy machine guns, M249 5.56 mm guns, and M240, UKM-2000C, and M134 Gatling 7.62 mm machine guns. The RS4 is also compatible with MK19, MK47, and H&K GMG 40 mm grenade launchers with airburst capability, various non-lethal systems, a 6.62 mm coaxial M240 kit, and multiple anti-tank missile options.
