Kosovo has finalized a contract with Indiana-based AM General for the acquisition of artillery-mounted High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HUMVEEs), marking a significant upgrade to the country’s mobile firepower.
The procurement includes the Hawkeye 105-mm soft-recoil mobile howitzer, a system that can be mounted or removed from the vehicle in under 90 seconds. Built around the M20 cannon, the weapon offers 360-degree firing coverage, a rate of fire of up to eight rounds per minute, and an effective range of up to 20 kilometers, depending on the ammunition employed.
Beyond the artillery systems, the contract covers spare parts, sustainment support, and training, as well as the delivery of medical evacuation vehicles, command-and-control trucks, and other support platforms to enhance the artillery fleet’s operational effectiveness and survivability.
Deliveries to the Kosovo Security Force, the country’s national military, are scheduled to begin between 2026 and 2027. AM General noted that this agreement represents the first export sale of the HUMVEE-mounted Hawkeye system since the platform was introduced.
The Hawkeye program dates back to 2016, when its testbed was unveiled, followed by adoption for simulated exercises five years later. The system saw its combat debut with Ukrainian forces in 2024, where it underwent frontline evaluation. In October 2025, AM General formally launched the production variant, featuring a lighter, more adaptable powertrain and updated design.
