L3Harris Technologies has obtained a $24-million contract to provide its software-defined data device supporting the US Army’s Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2) transport infrastructure.

Under the contract, the company will supply the AN/PRC-158C NGC2 Gateway Manpack — a customized upgrade of the Falcon IV AN/PRC-158 radio — to the 4th Infantry Division as it prepares for participation in Project Convergence 2026.

Operating across 30 to 2,500 MHz, the Falcon IV AN/PRC-158 is a dual-channel, modular radio built to deliver secure, high-throughput communication. It supports MUOS satellite capability for extended-range, beyond-line-of-sight connectivity.

Based on an adaptive Software Communications Architecture, the radio can dynamically switch waveforms and function as a mini data router to ensure interoperability across heterogeneous networks, aligning with NGC2’s integrated design goals.

The NGC2 framework represents the Army’s vision of a unified, multi-domain command and control ecosystem comprising four core layers — transport, infrastructure, data, and applications — that break down legacy communication silos.

Despite progress, a recent Army memo noted several cybersecurity and oversight issues in prototype testing, including inadequate tracking of sensitive data access and critical vulnerabilities in certain third-party software components.
