Sweden has supplied Latvia with Giraffe 1X air-surveillance radars, boosting the nation’s capability to detect and monitor airborne threats.
The Saab-built radar is already operational with the Latvian Armed Forces, having been first deployed by the air force during the Baltic Zenith 2023 exercises.
Latvia followed up with an additional order for Giraffe 1X units in December 2024.
This mobile radar system can spot incoming missiles, hostile drones, rockets, and mortar rounds over long distances and relay precise targeting information to command-and-control networks.
It can detect targets out to 400 kilometers (248 miles).
Weighing under 150 kilograms (330 pounds), the compact 3D sensor allows for quick deployment.
It can be vehicle-mounted, installed on naval platforms, or set up in stationary positions.
A two-person team can assemble the self-contained mobile variant in under 10 minutes and pack it down in less than five.
The system is also optimized for transport on C-130, A400M, and C-17 aircraft, and can be handled using standard container-loading equipment.
