Norway is set to acquire up to 50 MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedoes under a potential $162 million foreign military sale approved by the US State Department.

The package includes torpedo systems, containers, software, training, support gear, spares, and contractor services. RTX Corporation will act as the prime contractor, with technical and logistical support provided both in the US and temporarily in Norway.

According to Washington, the deal will advance US security interests by reinforcing Norway’s naval capabilities, addressing current and emerging threats, and enhancing NATO interoperability.

The MK 54 MOD 0 torpedo is a US Navy-standard anti-submarine weapon deployed from surface vessels, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters. Featuring commercial processors and updated tactical software, it is optimized for shallow-water operations and designed to detect, classify, and destroy underwater targets.

The torpedo measures nearly 107 inches (271.5 cm), weighs 607 pounds (275 kg), and carries a 100-pound (45 kg) high-explosive warhead. Widely exported, the system has recently been approved for sale to Saudi Arabia, India, and Germany, reflecting its role as a key NATO and allied anti-submarine weapon.
