Romania has awarded Raytheon a contract valued at $168 million for the acquisition of components supporting its Patriot air and missile defense systems.
The agreement includes the supply of radars, command-and-control units, launchers, test equipment, and associated support services for the NATO member. This marks Romania’s second Patriot-related contract with Raytheon this year, following a similar deal signed in April as part of Bucharest’s efforts to reinforce its layered air and missile defense architecture.
Romania is contracted to receive a total of seven Patriot systems, with deliveries having commenced in 2020 and full completion expected by 2030. Four systems were delivered in 2023, including one transferred as military assistance to Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Raytheon’s Patriot system is a mobile surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile defense solution that integrates advanced radar arrays, an antenna mast group, engagement control stations, and launcher units.
The system is capable of intercepting targets at altitudes of up to 36,000 meters (118,110 feet), at speeds of up to 6,170 kilometers per hour (3,834 miles per hour), and at ranges of up to 160 kilometers (99 miles).
First introduced in the 1980s, Patriot has undergone continuous upgrades to counter evolving threats. More than 1,100 systems have been produced and are currently in service with 19 countries, including the United States.
In 2025, Raytheon secured additional Patriot contracts from Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands.
