Sweden has awarded Saab a 9.6-billion-kronor ($1 billion) contract marking the final production stage of its Blekinge-class (A26) submarines. The agreement includes the supply of materials and related services, with most deliveries expected between 2026 and 2032.
The Blekinge-class features advanced modular design, supporting autonomous operations and integration with uncrewed underwater assets. Central to its configuration is the Multi-Mission Portal, enabling deployment of special forces teams, UUVs, and other payloads.
Designed for covert intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, the submarines can operate independently or in coordination with Saab’s Autonomous Ocean Drone and other unmanned systems.
Each vessel spans 66.1 meters, has a 6.75-meter beam, and displaces 1,925 tons. Powered by a hybrid system of diesel and Stirling engines, it carries a core crew of 17–26, expandable to 35 personnel when required.
