Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration has awarded Saab a contract worth 1.5 billion Swedish kronor ($162.9 million) for the supply of Trackfire Remote Weapon Stations (RWS) equipped with counter-drone capabilities.
The procurement supports the Swedish Army and the Amphibious Battalion 2030 program, which is focused on strengthening Sweden’s amphibious warfare capabilities in response to evolving threat environments and NATO integration requirements.
As part of the initiative, the Swedish Armed Forces aims to enhance operational effectiveness in archipelagic and coastal regions through the introduction of advanced systems. These include new mortar boats fitted with Patria’s NEMO indirect-fire system, complemented by the integration of Trackfire RWS to boost direct-fire lethality and counter-UAS protection.
Deliveries of the Trackfire systems are planned for the 2026–2028 period.
Engineered for highly dynamic combat scenarios, the Trackfire RWS can engage targets while on the move and provide aerial surveillance and defense when installed on naval platforms, land vehicles, or deployed in fixed defensive roles.
The system features a stabilized sensor suite that is decoupled from the weapon axes, isolating it from recoil effects and allowing operators to maintain uninterrupted target tracking. This design significantly shortens target acquisition times.
For counter-drone missions, Trackfire is armed with a 30×113mm M230LF Bushmaster chain gun, enabling effective engagement of uncrewed aerial systems using proximity-fuzed ammunition.
Additionally, the weapon station supports a wide range of armaments, including the M2 12.7mm heavy machine gun, FN MAG 58 7.62mm general-purpose machine gun, Mk19 40×53mm grenade launcher, and the H&K GMG 40×53mm automatic grenade launcher. Trackfire can also be integrated with non-lethal effectors and electronic warfare jamming systems.
