Sikorsky Secures $43M US Army Contract to Modernize Black Hawk
Sikorsky has been awarded an initial $43 million contract by the US Army to upgrade the Black Hawk helicopter under its long-term modernization program.
The upgrade will add an advanced digital framework to enable seamless integration with UAS and launched effects, while enhancing the helicopter’s airframe and fuel system. The improvements are aimed at boosting payload, range, and adaptability for emerging mission needs, with autonomy and AI-based flight controls anticipated in future updates.
Sikorsky’s modernization track record includes production of Upturned Exhaust System II kits, which reduce infrared signature and weight while improving reliability.
Additionally, in late 2024, Sikorsky secured a $6 million deal to install its MATRIX autonomy technology on a fly-by-wire UH-60M, with integration scheduled for 2025. The goal is to develop a partially autonomous Black Hawk capable of safer, more efficient operations in complex environments.
The Black Hawk also demonstrated its role in air-launched effects, with a 2023 test flight successfully deploying Anduril’s Altius 700 unmanned system, proving its effectiveness across mission stages.
