Spain has authorized Navantia to proceed with the design and construction of two new Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM)-class offshore patrol ships for the Spanish Navy.

Once delivered, the vessels will expand the current fleet of six BAMs, reinforcing the navy’s maritime security and surveillance capacity while ensuring the operational readiness of its maritime action force.

The €716 million ($847 million) investment includes improvements in combat performance, platform management, and crew habitability.

Following contract approval, engineering will begin immediately, with production targeted for the first half of 2027. The ships will be equipped with next-generation combat and integrated management systems, as well as advanced communication and navigation technologies.

They will also feature capabilities for unmanned operations, reinforced cybersecurity, new mission workspaces, upgraded medical facilities, and expanded crew living quarters.

These additions are designed to strengthen Spain’s naval response to maritime threats while providing enhanced onboard conditions for sailors.

Construction will be undertaken at Navantia’s Puerto Real facility, which utilizes high automation and advanced shipbuilding technologies. The engineering phase will employ Navantia’s ELCANO digital program, based on Siemens platforms.
