To replace its aging M109 artillery units, Spain is launching a major procurement effort to acquire over 200 self-propelled howitzers, split between tracked and wheeled variants.
The initiative, exceeding €3 billion ($3.51 billion), is divided into two subprograms. The first, worth €1.82 billion ($2.12 billion), covers the acquisition of 128 tracked howitzers for both the Spanish Army and the Marine Infantry. These howitzers will be highly mobile and automated, requiring fewer crew members and delivering faster reaction times. They are expected to have 47–52 caliber barrels and fire base-bleed rounds with a range of over 40 km (25 miles).
This subprogram also includes 128 ammunition support vehicles, 21 recovery units, 48 command vehicles for the army, 11 for the marines, and 7 optional maintenance units.
The second subprogram will see the acquisition of 86 wheeled howitzers—potentially 8×8 or 10×10 configurations—alongside an equal number of ammunition vehicles, 14 recovery vehicles, and 7 optional maintenance units, for €1.18 billion ($1.38 billion).
