Sweden has placed an order with Saab for new sensors and a command-and-control system to support brigade-level ground-based air defense operations.
The 2.1-billion-krona ($220 million) contract includes Giraffe 1X radars, the LSS Lv C2 system, weapon-integration work, studies, and spare parts to enhance the nation’s mobile short-range air defense capability.
Saab will also conduct an integration study to evaluate adding its AMB medium-range radar, designed to detect aircraft and drones, into the brigade air defense architecture.
Deliveries are expected between 2027 and 2028.
Sweden has previously procured the Giraffe 1X 3D radar, offering 360-degree coverage and capable of detecting extremely small targets—reportedly as small as a milk carton at up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles).
Weighing under 150 kilograms (330 pounds), the radar can be used in mobile, deployable, or fixed configurations, detecting threats such as drones and missiles.
The LSS Lv system provides command and control, enabling coordinated target engagement, threat-information sharing, and operational planning and assessment.
