Sweden has signed a 4-billion-krona ($360 million) contract with Saab to continue the maintenance and support of its Gripen C/D and Gripen E fighter aircraft.
The new deal expands on a 2020 framework agreement that established long-term provisions for Gripen sustainment, system upgrades, and logistics support.
Between 2026 and 2027, Saab will provide system maintenance, spare parts, component repairs, and training for pilots and technicians, with options to extend services through 2029. The agreement also covers software maintenance and mission system updates to ensure the aircraft remain aligned with evolving operational demands.
According to Saab, the contract extension will sustain the Gripen C/D fleet while facilitating a smooth transition to the newer Gripen E model.
Signed with Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the deal supports domestic jobs in avionics, logistics, and systems integration, reinforcing Sweden’s defense industrial base.
Modernizing the Swedish Air Force
This renewed contract forms part of Sweden’s broader air power modernization program amid heightened regional security challenges.
The Gripen C/D fleet continues to receive mission system and electronic warfare upgrades, while Gripen E production is accelerating for delivery to Sweden and export clients like Brazil.
In parallel, the Swedish Air Force is enhancing base infrastructure and road-based dispersal capabilities to improve rapid deployment readiness during crises.
