Teledyne Gavia, a subsidiary of Teledyne Marine, has delivered the first four GAVIA autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration.
The delivery forms part of a multi-year framework agreement supporting the Swedish Armed Forces’ fleet modernization and expansion of autonomous undersea capabilities. According to the company, the handover was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
The AUVs feature a modular design that allows rapid reconfiguration for multiple mission sets, including mine countermeasures and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tasks. To support the program, Teledyne has developed a dedicated service and sustainment model in partnership with FLIR Sweden, ensuring long-term in-country support.
GAVIA is a fully modular, field-reconfigurable AUV designed for multi-mission operations with a minimal logistics footprint. It can be deployed by a two-person team from shore or from “vessels of opportunity,” eliminating the need for specialized launch systems.
Depending on configuration, the vehicle measures between 1.8 and 4.5 meters in length and weighs between 50 and 130 kilograms. It can operate at depths of up to 1,000 meters and reach speeds exceeding 5.5 knots.
Powered by interchangeable lithium-ion battery modules, GAVIA typically achieves 7 to 8 hours of endurance at 3 knots per battery, with the ability to carry up to three batteries for extended missions. The platform is already in service with 18 navies worldwide, including multiple NATO and partner nations, underscoring its suitability for operations in contested littoral environments such as the Baltic Sea.
