The Royal Navy has detailed its intention to acquire 20 uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) to accelerate its transformation into a hybrid maritime force blending crewed and autonomous assets.
Under the framework of Project Beehive, the initial batch will be purchased at TRL 4/5 maturity and refined through progressive spiral development. The vessels will adopt an open-architecture configuration, supporting plug-and-play upgrades and sustained operational relevance against advanced adversaries.
Designed as experimental platforms, the USVs will enable the Navy to test, evaluate, and operationalize emerging technologies. Most project activities will be centered in southern and southwestern England under a £10 million ($13 million) contract.
The announcement coincided with the Royal Navy’s demonstration of five remotely piloted Rattler boats off Scotland’s coast. Controlled from 500 miles away, the craft integrated autonomy kits and remote-command systems to escort a warship, showcasing the Navy’s expanding uncrewed capabilities.
These initiatives align with the Royal Navy’s roadmap toward a hybrid fleet—one where uncrewed escort vessels operate in tandem with new submarines and Type 26 frigates in the North Atlantic. The service is also preparing to deploy hybrid air wings on its Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, highlighted by the upcoming first launch of a jet-powered drone from a carrier deck next year, marking a breakthrough in naval aviation integration.
