Germany plans to acquire up to 400 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) from the United States in a deal valued at $1.23 billion, pending congressional approval.
The package includes missiles, guidance systems, test equipment, training, and logistical support. The AIM-120D-3, the most advanced AMRAAM variant, offers extended range, improved guidance, and enhanced electronic warfare resilience—capabilities crucial for integrating the F-35 into Germany’s future air operations.
The sale also provides 12 M-Code GPS guidance sections, one integrated test vehicle, telemetry kits, encryption devices, spare parts, and contractor support, with RTX Corporation serving as the principal contractor. The U.S. emphasized that the sale aligns with its foreign policy objectives and that Germany can seamlessly integrate the systems.
The deal is part of Germany’s broader defense modernization amid heightened tensions with Russia, including increased defense spending, F-35 acquisitions, and advanced air defense systems.
