AeroVironment (AV) has handed over the first two prototypes of its LOCUST mobile counter-drone laser weapon system to the US Army under the Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) program. Mounted on Infantry Squad Vehicles, the 20-kilowatt laser is designed to neutralize drones with precision. The LOCUST features a modular, plug-and-play architecture compatible with multiple sensors and RF bands, allowing rapid detection and engagement in contested environments. Enhanced by multi-target infrared tracking, it automates threat detection and switching. Its operator interface, modeled after a gaming controller, reduces training needs while offering intuitive control. The system also provides ultra-high bandwidth tracking with HD video overlay for real-time situational awareness. Tested at Yuma Proving Ground after integration at AV’s Albuquerque facility, the system supports both fixed and mobile applications, with seamless integration into modern command-and-control networks.
