The United States has approved an arms package worth approximately $11 billion for Taiwan, Taipei announced on Thursday, marking one of the largest weapons sales to the island and drawing sharp criticism from China.

Although Washington has long been Taiwan’s primary arms supplier, recent remarks by the US president have raised questions about America’s willingness to defend the self-governed island.

Taiwan has significantly increased its defense spending over the past decade in response to rising military pressure from China, while the Trump administration has repeatedly urged Taipei to further strengthen its own defense capabilities.

The arms package, which still requires approval from the US Congress, represents the second major sale to Taiwan since Trump returned to office in January, following a $330 million sale of spare parts approved in November.

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the latest package includes HIMARS rocket launchers, artillery systems, anti-tank missiles, drones, and other military equipment.
