Nokia and Latvian telecom operator LMT have signed an agreement to co-develop a 5G tactical communications network tailored for military and defense operations in the Baltic region.
The initiative combines Nokia’s expertise in radio and network technology with LMT’s experience in defense communications, aiming to deliver a resilient, high-capacity, and secure system capable of supporting real-time data exchange between command posts, sensors, and unmanned platforms.
Structured as a modular, interoperable solution, the system will incorporate AI and autonomous capabilities to support evolving battlefield and multi-domain operations.
Both companies previously collaborated on Latvia’s national 5G network and conducted field demonstrations at Ādaži military base, using a portable network built on Nokia’s Banshee platform.
The new program underscores Nokia’s growing role in defense-grade 5G communications. The company has recently teamed with Motorola Solutions to create a rapid-deploy containerized network for the UK military, and with Rheinmetall to develop a next-generation tactical network for German forces. Additionally, partnerships with Lockheed Martin and Verizon have advanced the 5G.MIL initiative, integrating commercial and military communications for secure, multi-domain operations.
