General Dynamics Land Systems–UK and Ricardo have announced a joint initiative to produce lightweight, Light Mobility Vehicles for the British Army as part of the Land Mobility Programme (LMP).
The partnership will modify the Ford Ranger Super Duty platform to fit defense operational standards covering payload capacity, mobility, and sustainment needs.
Early prototypes include 4×4 and 6×6 versions designed to preserve the Ranger’s core safety, drivetrain, and towing performance while introducing military-grade upgrades that boost protection, power output, and terrain handling.
This development approach capitalizes on the Ranger’s proven commercial reliability, wide parts availability, and service infrastructure while transforming it into a field-ready platform suitable for global operations. The effort is projected to bolster domestic employment, expand UK supplier networks, and contribute to long-term platform maintenance.
The Land Mobility Programme forms part of the UK’s drive to streamline and modernize ground vehicle fleets into more adaptable and efficiently supported systems. The program spans Light Mobility, Light Protected, and Medium Protected Mobility classes, aiming for initial operational capability toward the decade’s end.
Complementing this, ongoing efforts such as Project Atilla’s conversion of retired Warrior vehicles into robotic mine-breaching systems and NP Aerospace’s armored fleet support contracts continue to advance UK land domain modernization.
