Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Development Corp (AIDC) has unveiled a new 8-kilowatt fiber-optic laser, marking a significant milestone in the island’s ongoing asymmetric defense initiatives.
Showcased at the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition, the solid-state fiber laser operates at around 1.07 micrometers, a wavelength specifically tuned for performance in humid coastal environments.
Engineered to neutralize threats within a range of 1 to 2 kilometers (0.62 to 1.24 miles), the system is currently undergoing controlled testing, with trials limited to 150 meters (492 feet) for safety purposes.
