The Advanced Armoured Platforms (tracked and wheeled), developed by Vehicles Research and Development Establishment, were officially unveiled by Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence (R&D) and Chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation, at the DRDO facility in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, on April 25, 2026. These platforms are designed to address the evolving operational requirements of India’s armed forces.
Both variants are equipped with an indigenously developed 30 mm crewless turret featuring advanced capabilities for enhanced mobility, firepower, and protection. Powered by high-performance engines and automatic transmission systems, the platforms offer a high power-to-weight ratio, superior speed, and strong gradient and obstacle negotiation capabilities. They provide STANAG Level 4 and 5 protection, supported by modular blast and ballistic shielding. Additionally, amphibious functionality with hydrojet propulsion enhances water-crossing capabilities, increasing battlefield flexibility.
The turret is integrated with a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun and is capable of launching anti-tank guided missiles, enabling multi-role combat functionality. The base platform is designed for adaptability across various mission profiles. Currently, the systems feature about 65% indigenous content, with plans to increase this to 90%.
Manufacturing has been carried out by industry partners Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited, supported by a network of MSMEs, reinforcing India’s growing defence industrial ecosystem. The unveiling event was attended by senior DRDO officials, including Directors General of Armament & Combat Engineering Systems (ACE) and Production, Coordination & Services Interaction (PC&SI), along with industry leaders and scientists from multiple DRDO laboratories such as ARDE, DMRL, HEMRL, CVRDE, and R&DE (Engineers).
