Data Patterns, the Chennai-based defence electronics company, has unveiled the prototype of its Hawk-1900, a next-generation Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar designed for lightweight fighter aircraft. Equipped with approximately 876 Transmit/Receive Modules (TRMs), the compact radar is intended for platforms such as the MiG-29, including the MiG-29UPG/K, and the LCA Tejas Mk1/Mk1A.
For the Indian Air Force’s MiG-29UPG fleet, which is expected to remain operational into the late 2030s, the Hawk-1900 offers a potential indigenous replacement for the ageing Russian Zhuk-ME radar. Designed as a plug-and-play upgrade, the new radar is expected to provide superior multi-target engagement capability, enhanced situational awareness, and improved resistance to electronic warfare.
When integrated with the indigenously developed D-29 electronic warfare (EW) suite, the Hawk-1900 could significantly enhance the combat effectiveness of the MiG-29 despite limitations associated with the aircraft’s ageing airframe and engines. The radar is also being positioned as a domestic AESA solution for the LCA Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A, providing an alternative to systems such as the DRDO Uttam AESA radar.
The Hawk-1900 is a compact derivative of Data Patterns’ larger Hawk-12700 AESA radar, which features between 2,400 and 2,700 TRMs and is being considered for the Su-30MKI “Super Sukhoi” modernization program. Together, the two radars demonstrate the company’s capability to develop scalable, indigenous AESA solutions for multiple fighter aircraft categories, supporting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in advanced airborne sensor technologies.
The development comes amid growing concerns over the reliability and long-term support of Russian-origin radar systems installed on legacy fighter fleets, particularly naval variants. Successful integration of the Hawk-1900 could extend the operational life of India’s MiG-29 fleet, reduce dependence on imported radar components, and potentially create export opportunities for countries operating MiG-29 aircraft.
Although challenges related to airframe fatigue and engine longevity remain, the Hawk-1900 represents a significant modernization step for India’s fourth-generation fighter fleet while providing a technological bridge until next-generation platforms such as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) enter service.
Key Features of the Hawk-1900
GaN-Based TRMs: Utilizes Gallium Nitride technology to deliver greater power efficiency, improved thermal management, and extended detection range compared with older Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)-based radars.
Swashplate Antenna Design: Incorporates a mechanical repositioning mechanism that enables wide-area scanning, offering approximately ±70° to ±100° coverage through a combination of mechanical and electronic beam steering.
Multi-Role Fire Control Radar: Supports both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, featuring multi-target tracking of over 20 targets, low probability of intercept (LPI), and strong electronic counter-countermeasure (ECCM) capabilities.
Extended Detection Range: Expected to detect fighter-sized aircraft at distances exceeding 150–200 km, significantly improving combat awareness and engagement capability.
