Finnish technology company Varjo has unveiled a new range of mixed reality (MR) headsets designed specifically for defense and security training applications.

The refreshed XR-4 lineup introduces the XR-4 Secure Edition and XR-4 Focal Edition, optimized for high-fidelity simulation across air, land, and maritime training environments.

These new variants feature enhanced sensors, improved ergonomic comfort for prolonged use, and configurations certified for secure or radio-silent facilities. Additional upgrades include autofocus passthrough cameras, superior low-light capability for night operations, and a ruggedized build suitable for field deployment.

According to Varjo, the new headsets deliver a more realistic, secure, and integrated platform for mixed-reality training, seamlessly combining virtual and physical environments. They are compatible with existing defense simulators, including those used for aviation and armored vehicle systems.

The launch aligns with a global rise in defense adoption of MR and XR technologies aimed at improving training efficiency and mission preparedness.

In the United States, the Army employs Varjo’s XR-3 headsets within its Reconfigurable Virtual Collective Trainer (RVCT) program, enabling helicopter crews to train collaboratively in realistic virtual environments without full-scale aircraft simulators.

Across Europe, militaries are expanding similar programs. The Finnish Air Force now uses MR tools within its Live-Virtual-Constructive (LVC) framework to merge live flight operations with virtual simulation, while a Czech-developed MR simulator is currently used to train Ukrainian F-16 pilots.
